The Furry Resource Page is Back
WhiteFire - October 29, 2001
We are again updating the Furry Resource Page.

News server access now requires authentication
WhiteFire - June 8, 2001
The news server now requires a username and password for access. See
the services page for that info.

No news is good news?
WhiteFire - March 26, 1999
Yea, I know, we have not been keeping this page up to date. You can
stop telling me that. :)

In the news, however, we are moving to a temp location, hosted by
arclight.net, since packbell screwed up our T1 during the site move.
This change is temoporary and should just last a week or two.

They have pleanty of bandwidth, so you should notice no service loss.

Downtime - Security Violated
WhiteFire - October 19, 1998
An intruder broke into snowfox.fur.com and gained root access to the machine. They did considerable damage to the machine, requiring it to be rebuilt. We were also forced to rebuild the main NFS server.

Several upgrades were made at this time as well, both for security and performance. Snowfox was updated to run debian, with a K6-233, and 128MB of ram and a faster disk. Tiger went to Solaris 2.6. A 100MB hub was added to the computer room, to which Tiger and Snowfox are connected.

Downtime started at 9am, October 16th, 1998. Various services came up later that day, Mail and WWW services too until sunday to get back up.

Several users may need to contact fur.com admins to get their passwords set to something new. All passwords were comprimized duiring the attack.

Thanks for your understanding and support,
WhiteFire

New UPS for Tiger
WhiteFire - June 17, 1998
tiger.fur.com now has it's own, bigger, UPS to run on, this sould extend fur.com's life expectancy during power failures. Further, this UPS comes with montoring software compatible with our environment, which should allow for automated shutdowns. More on that later.

Power Outage
WhiteFire - June 16, 1998
All services at fur.com went down for about an hour during the third of three power outages brought to us by the letters P, G and E. This happened around 8:30 to 9:30.

New Webserver Implemented
WhiteFire - June 11, 1998
tiger.fur.com has replaced snowfox.fur.com as it's primary web server. This change will speed up web access dramaticly, and, will relive a lot of stress on the mail server.

It is planned to replace the mail/shell account server with new hardware in the near future as well, gonig from a 486/100 to a K6/233 with twice the ram.

T1 Scheduled
WhiteFire - October 15, 1997
FUR.COM has made arangments to have a T1 installed in about 60 days, and to go operational about a week after that. This T1 will provide the following benifits:
  • 11 Times the speed
  • Better Reliablility
  • Better connected ISP
The downside to this is, of course, changing our IP addresses again since you can't keep them between service providers.

Thanks to Donald Kent and his place of employment, @home, for making this posible.

ISDN Outage Ends
WhiteFire - October 16 1997, 8:30 pm
It apears that, over 48 hours after their screwup, Pacific Bell has fininaly repared the damaged trunk.

ISDN Outage
WhiteFire - October 14 1997, 6:30 pm
At 6:30 pm we lost all conectivity with Pacific Bell. We could not even establish a low level connection to the switch at the other end. Don is handling talking to Pac Bell about the problem.

It turns out that Pacific Bell had wrecked one of their trunk lines that night, and that it took them about 36 hours to figure this out. It caused various outages up and down our street.

Outage affects all conectivity for fur.com servers to the outside world.
