Kexul - The Prison of Agony
Kexul (kex-ool) is another of the Spiral prisons, this one dedicated to the study of pain. Prisoners brought here are taken below the surface of the lifeless little island, to dark vaults of unimaginable torture. Many of the machines are alive, or at least, animated, producing toxic secretions to increse the agony of the wounds they inflict. Others are designed to both sustain life and regenerate flesh even as they cause damage, extending the duration of certain procedures so that they may be studied. As the Spiral end up fighting so many different beings, each of which may have different vulnerabilities, testing of this sort if needed frequently. Most prisoners held here don't live more than a few weeks, even with regenerative care. Specialized undead, animated and actively malevolent torture devices, Spiral priests, and at least a score of horribly maimed and traumatized prisoners can all be found here. The vaults are large and very dark, full of their echoing screams.
Those trapped within this prison burn out slowly, their nerves failing in spite of care, or their minds collapsing into ruin from excessive stimulation and sensation-enhancing drugs. There are many spirits haunting this place, and the very air is tinged with the sense of endless suffering. Nobody has ever escaped. The bodies of those who burn out are generally melted down into necril and used in the construction of other devices or the vaults themselves. The floors are also lined with numerous grooves; blood channels that interlock in curious patterns and glyphs. These are presumably used in some form of black ritual.
