Venturing through this region is like traveling through a nightmare. The Wasting has changed the few stunted trees into twisted skeletons, and the tall marsh grasses are tough and razor-edged. In some places, quicksand lurks beneath the ground fog, waiting to pull the unwary to their doom. Those who become lost often hear voices, whispers drawn from their subconscious, speaking a language of fear. As the gloom deepens, this whispers become visual hallucinations - faces, silhouettes, lost friends or defeated enemies. It is the ghostly fog which draws forth these delusions, amplifying fear into hysteria, and hysteria into madness. But the real menace that lies within the Ashmoor has yet to be seen, lying in wait, deep beneath the cold, wet earth.
Entombed within the dark bogs and moors of this desolate region are countless victims of ritualized sacrifice. The Spiral bury them here, in a place where the ground is tainted heavily by the dark power of the Ashworks. Over time, the corpses blacken and mummify, becoming far tougher than conventional animated dead. This treatment process also involves the removal of organs and the injection of mercury, which prevents decay from setting in. Currently, the Spiral are amassing an army of these foul zombies, and there are already close to five thousand of them 'maturing' in the bogs. When fully assembled, this dread legion will rival any land army on Rym.
The bogmen have several advantages over standard undead troops. Their tough, leathery skin keeps them from being easily shattered, and their near-black hue makes them almost undetectable at night. Bogmen are even more frightening in appearance than conventional skeletons or zombies, with shrivelled, sewn-up faces and emaciated, bony limbs that pop and creak gruesomely when they move. They are typically buried with swords wrapped in fatty animal skin, for immediate armament upon animation. On occasion, grave expeditions pass through this region, consisting of Spiral priests and drugged slaves. They are taken into the bogs and forced to dig their own graves, before being sacrificed on low, black stone altars found throughout the region.
