Icewell Lake

This is the larges lake in Penduk, where the north and south branches of the Tethys meet. So named for its frigid waters, Icewell Lake is also fed by the cold runoff from Haun's Arlos mountain range. A number of small settlements can be found around the lake, most of which rely on the Tethys for important and exports in an otherwise remote region. Their barges can seen in vast quantities during the warmer seasons, while during the winter, the entire lake freezes over and the Tethys shipping lanes close down. The enormous lake also supports a large diversity of wildlife, including large aquatic predators such as river drakes, giant crawfish, and razorback eels.

Icewell is also the deepest lake to be found anywhere on the mainland, descending nearly a thousand feet into freezing darkness where nothing lives or grows. Some believe the lake empties into even deeper subterranean caverns carved out by the Creators long ago for reasons unknown, and that there may be something of great importance given than Icewell lies close to the exact center of Penduk. Others believe it to be the lair of some ancient leviathan from the time of the Twilight War. In either case, the depths of Icewell have yet to be explored. Colorful legends aside, the Erdani find it more useful for fishing and trade.

Most of the villages which surround Icewell export fish, lumber, and ore mined from the nearby Arlos mountains. These exports are shipped out on barges, destined for the Tethys and the larger southern cities along its banks. The river folk are far less cosmopolitain than the majority of Erdani citizens, and tend to be more practical with their time and money.
