The Sand Flats
The vast area of open savanna and flood plain that covers the southern portion of Lumin is relatively desolate, with only hardy strains of tall grass and proto palms amid vast tracts of pale sand. The arrid landscape is broken up in places by small, green river valleys and the occasional oasis, and is the home of many small, ostrich-like lizards. Most of these are scavengers, though some are large enough to bring down game when working in packs. There are no settlements here, as every year during the rainy season much of the land is lost to flooding, which washes away most of the fertile soil and leaves only sand in its place. The lutrai find it too boring, and the koba find it too dry, which suits its current chief resident quite nicely. More on him later.
North of the flats are low, green limestone mountains. These mountains contain numerous caves and grottos, some filled with sparkling veins of raw emerald and aquamarine. Others contain strange fossils, or deep mineral pools that descend far below the surface. The lutrai do not understand the true value of these things, only that some of them are sparkling and attractive, and thus the green and blue gemstones are fairly common in lutraic jewelery. They lack the tools to cut proper facets, but any lutrai artizan worth his or her salt will have a wind-powered rock tumbler to polish them. Still, they know not to take too many, mostly for fear of the ancient caves collapsing, but also so that there will be some left over for the next lifetime. This unusual moderation is perhaps the only reason the island's chief resident lets them get away with it.
The Water Dragon
His name is Oceanus, and he has lived on this island for three thousand years, since the end of the ancient war. He was once an avatar of Mera, the ocean goddess, before she was destroyed by the Creators. Stripped of his powers, he now languishes in sullen exile within the caves north of the sand flats. Oceanus is one of the last dragons left on Rym, an ageless incarnation of the sea. His glory days are over now, his fighting spirit extinguished by the horrors of the ancient war and his own failure to protect the sea goddess he once served. Most of his days are spent staring out over the tractless southern sea, lost in ancient memories. From time to time, he will use his weakened magic to take on other forms in the hopes of finding a new life somewhere, but these fits of denial always seem to end in failure. He has found some small comfort in the lutrai, whose cheer and innocence will occasionally draw a hidden smile from the ancient creature. To them, he is just a myth, a Shining Beast from the past. Not that it stops them from bringing tributes to his cave.
Oceanus does not have a horde of treasure, or even a permanent lair. His realm is the ocean, his body adapted to the water. In his true form, the dragon spans two hundred feet from snout to tail, and weighs roughtly four hundred tons. His body is covered in slick, dolphin-like hide in patterns of teal and aquamarine, armored in key places by a rind of coral. His claws and teeth are of pearl, his eyes opalescent turquoise, and when he speaks, it is with the power of a raging storm. While he does have great, membranous wings, his preferred mode of travel is by water, an element in which he can become completely invisible. In this way, he keeps a very low profile, hoping to avoid the notice of Nigh and the City Mind.
