South Koau (Island)

Terrain: Hills (rolling), Grassland
Movement Cost: 2

South Koau was the location chosen by the Solinar to contruct one of their great havens, a temple to Kij surrounded by rolling hills and orchards. It was a place where paladins trained, a place of healing and light before the rise of the Spiral Order. The island is now home to nothing more than the ancient temple's ruins, as well as its guardian, a great topaz lion that chases off all who venture close to the ruins. The island contains many remains, such as bleached horse skeletons, the occasional overgrown wall, and other fading traces of civilization. The rolling hills are dotted with cypress trees and a variety of other fauna brought by the Solinar long ago. Most lutrai elders are of the opinion that this island is best left untouched, partly because it is sacred ground, and partly because of the island guardian.

The guardian is like one of those King's Quest monsters that just knows you're there, and comes and wails on you unless you've got the right item in your inventory. It doesn't matter how careful you are, whether you're invisible, in a different shape, or protected by insane spells. If you venture close to the ruins, the guardian just comes and pounds on you.

Guardian (Topaz Golem / N)
HP: 200 AC: -6 THAC0: 1
Attacks:
2 (claw/claw) 3d6/3d6
Special Attacks: Roar, Sunray
Special Defenses: Immune to magic, +3 weapons or better to hit, never surprised

Roar: The lion will always begin combat with a deafening roar, which acts as a 10th level 'Fear' spell on all creatures within a hundred feet of it. Those within ten feet (melee range) also suffer the effects of a 10th level 'Shout' spell. The lion can roar once per turn.

Sunray: When facing undead beings, the lion will open combat with a 10th level 'Sunray' spell. For three rounds, it will issue forth dazzling beams of light from its multi-faceted body, one beam per round, inflicting 8d6 damage to all undead caught in its path (save for 1/2 damage). See 7th level priest spell, 'Sunray'.

Magic Immunity: The guardian is totally immune to magic, both subtle and extreme. It cannot be fooled by illusions, nor harmed by invocations. It is not subject to elemental spells that affect its substance, nor disjunction. In short, only indirect use of magic can cause the guardian any harm.

Personality : Despite the seemingly-massive damage it inflicts, the guardian will not kill good creatures, but instead use subdual attacks. Once the intruder(s) have been rendered senseless, the lion will drag them off the temple grounds and return to its patrol. The topaz lion is only semi-intelligent, though its capacity for compassion might indicate something more than a rudimentary automaton. The lion is completely immune to magic, cannot be fooled by illusions, and is generally very, very direct..
