About the Policies
The policies are nothing short of a contract that the user agrees to abide by. Failure to do so may lead to loss of privileges or even termination of your account. They can also be looked at as an Acceptable Use Policy, or just plain rules that guests of the system are expected to follow.

The purpose of the policies are to help provide a consensual, enjoyable experience on this system, by giving guidelines for what is considered socially acceptable behavior as well as defining the wizard's expectations of the users.

While the policies try to be reasonably comprehensive, we know we can not cover every possible situation. Therefore the wizards will try and uphold the spirit of these policies rather than the letter of them.

The next step is to look at Policy Mission Statement for an overview of what the muck is about.

From there you should read Policy Glossary for a list of terms used in these policies, and then see the index below for a list of what policies Tapestries MUCK has. You should be familiar with all of them.

If you have any questions or comments, please contact the wizards within the muck with the in game Request System. For alternalte methods of contact, please see Contacting Us.

Note: The policies were originally broken up to facilitate easy reading on the Muck. As such they are arranged in many small chunks. That may be fixed in the future now that they are exclusively web published.

WhiteWizard:

Consent Out Of Character (OOC) is a cornerstone principle of Role-Playing (RP) on Tapestries Muck. This is especially important on a system where BDSM (Bondage Domination Sadism Masochism) and other RP may include In Character (IC) or in-scene representations of non-consensual behavior. As such, communicating OOCly to establish and maintain consent for such forms of play is critical.

Safeword
When you feel a desire to step back from play, you need to be able to make it clear that you're not just making token protests that are part of the fun: you need a clear way to communicate to the other people you're playing with that they need to stop what they're doing with you.

In a Real Life (RL) BDSM game/scene, the way to indicate that something is not part of the game is to use your "Safeword". A Safeword is a word you set aside to mean "Stop, we need to talk as equals and/or stop play."

On Tapestries the word "Safeword" itself is recognized MUCK-wide by everyone, much as it would in a RL public play space. Failure to respect Safeword is a violation of this policy and could lead to your ejection from Tapestries. We consider this a very important concept to insure RL consent between players.

Another commonly used form of Safeword is the Green, Yellow, Red form, derived from traffic lights. Green means go on, go harder. Yellow means, slow down, do something different, and Red means Stop, like Safeword described above.

If your new to this sort of play it is strongly suggested you look at soc.subculture.bondage-bdsm FAQ.

Another useful toolkit -- which aren't available IRL -- are commands that allow OOC communication alongside the RP/scene. This can be used as a way to course-correct play before having to stop or pause it to negotiate. The <big><code>whisper</code></big> and <big><code>page</code></big> commands both can be used for this, and when doing so it is advisable you prefix text with "OOC" to make it clear that the communication is from you, the player. The <big><code>ooc</code></big> command will making a public posting that identifies the text as OOC automatically.

Coercion and Retaliation
It's important that when you choose to engage in play, you make that choice because it's something you want to do, not because you feel forced into that play because you're trying to avoid negative consequences. We strongly encourage clear and mutually respectful OOC discussions between players about their expectations and desires, and we understand that players may part ways if those expectations and desires are fundamentally incompatible.

However, under no circumstances may users make threats to compel another player to engage in RP or other conduct of any kind (including the free association with other users), nor may they retaliate against another player for doing so. This includes, but is not limited to:

* the threat or act of harming oneself.
* the threat or act of harming another.
* the threat or act of harming the victim's reputation.
* the threat or act of using any granted administrative powers against the victim.
* the threat of toading one's character.
* manipulative guilt-tripping / emotional blackmail.
* playing the victim (victim playing / DARVO). DARVO is an acronym for:
** D – Deny: The person completely denies their behavior or refutes the facts when confronted ("I never said that" or "That didn't happen").
** A – Attack: They attack the credibility, intelligence, or character of the person confronting them to divert attention ("You are just crazy," "You're too sensitive," or "You always try to ruin things").
** RVO – Reverse Victim and Offender: They switch roles entirely, positioning themselves as the true mistreated party while manipulating the actual victim into feeling like the aggressor. By the end of the conversation, the victim is often the one apologizing.
* Gaslighting. Common tactics include:
** Countering: Questioning the victim's memory of events ("You have a terrible memory").
** Withholding: Refusing to listen or pretending not to understand ("I'm not listening to this again").
** Trivializing: Making the victim's feelings seem unimportant ("You're overreacting").
** Forgetting/Denial: Pretending to forget things that happened or denying promises made ("I never agreed to that").
* the threat of no longer playing in the same places as the victim.
* threatening to get the wizards or zone administration to punish the victim.

While it may be difficult from a single incident to establish that a behavior is the sort of coercion detailed here if it is, or a pattern of behavior that is observed demonstrates it, the offending user is likely to be removed with out notice. Consent is not optional on Tapestries.

MUCK Mission Statement

In more detail:
* BDSM - Bondage, Dominance/Discipline, Sadism, Masochism. This is a general breakdown of the acronym, and in this case it is meant to explain that Tapestries MUCK is a place for people who are generally interested in ways to have sex that are outside the mainstream.
* Play Party - A BDSM Play Party is a place where people are free to publicly explore and express these alternate forms of sexuality, free of worry of judgment from people who are not interested in their kinks.
* Social Gathering - To find new people, interests, and generally to have fun, it is important to have social gatherings alongside the play.
* Adults - The Muck requires that you be 18 years of age or older to create a character. This is important to free people from legal and moral concerns in an environment that caters to sexuality.
* Tolerance - Tolerance of other people's play, fantasies, beliefs, sexuality and other such things is absolutely critical for people to be comfortable sharing the very personal things that they do on Tapestries. Thus a certain level of tolerance and respect that goes beyond mainstream society is required of people that play here. See Policy Public Conduct, Policy Harassment, and Policy Roleplaying and TinySex.
* Furry - This MUCK is for members of the furry fandom to explore their sexuality and is especially aimed at interests in the type of fantasy creatures that they enjoy. As such people are both required to play nonhuman characters, and be respectful of the species others wish to play. See Policy Humans.
* <font color=red>Roleplay - Roleplaying on Tapestries is loosely defined as acting out the behaviors of a character within the context of the theme of the MUCK based on that character's background and personality. Some people choose to play something very close to who they are in real life, while others play characters that differ quite strongly from who they are as a person. While some areas of the MUCK have more or less stringent policies regarding adherence to zone theme, tolerance of both playstyles is required.</font>

See Policy Theme for information about the IC theme of the world.

We believe that privacy is a very important part of making a safe play space.

It is important that a person be able to explore themselves on a muck with out worrying about these things coming to haunt them in other places, or even other characters.

The following things should not be done:
* Sharing Logs - Sharing logs from Tapestries in any form is prohibited UNLESS everyone who's output is displayed in the log is consulted and agrees to whatever distribution is done FIRST. This not only includes says and poses, but descriptions of people and rooms as well. Violating this is a copyright violation and considered a very serious Muck offense. Editing out names is not sufficient to evade this policy.
** Exceptions - Staff of approved public building may receive logs of events in public rooms. Such logs may ONLY contain what happened in public areas that the staff maintains, and only public communications (no whispers, pages, or any other form of private communication.) Staff receiving such logs should in turn be aware that logs can be edited and take logs from untrusted sources with caution. Such logs should only be used in policy enforcement in said area.
* Real Life Information - Handing out RL information about other players with out their consent is not acceptable. This includes the identities of alts (other characters that they own.)
* Requesting RL Information - Users always have a right to refuse to disclose RL information to other players. Any time RL information is requested, it must be with the understanding that they can refuse. Attempting to pressure or coerce the information out of a another player is not acceptable.
* Snooping - People should not attempt to access through tricks of MPI or other code things about people they could not otherwise find out. Getting at descriptions and other properties, writing tools to log or otherwise listen into conversations in areas you are not in and don't own are all examples of this.
* Monitoring Rooms - Public Building may be monitored by their owners in private monitoring rooms. These monitoring rooms should not cover lockable "private" areas, just the main public ones. Such monitoring should also be mentioned in the area's rules.
* Press - Members of the press MAY NOT ACT AS ONE on Tapestries. Any attempt to do reporting on the Muck and/or it's populace will result in banning for life, not toading.

Tapestries MUCK is set up to be a safe public play-space, and therefore people should feel safe to publicly speak of, and practice, various forms of sex, bondage, domination, and sadomasochism without judgment or shame. You should expect to see it, and be able to at the least ignore it if you desire to hang out in public places.

In all places public or private:

# Out of Character (RL) CONSENT is required for any play, public or private anywhere on Tapestries MUCK. See policy harassment. Not sure? Ask. You are responsible for establishing consent.
# Character Agency will be respected at all times. All players have final say on what happens to their characters. See (1).
# Safeword OOC will always be respected. Safeword IC will be respected unless the area specifically states otherwise. See Policy Safeword or the alt.sex.bondage FAQ if you are unfamiliar with this.
# You may not disrupt someone's scene in progress.
# You may not represent yourself as a Wizard, or as a representative thereof.

In all Core Building and Public Building areas the following rules must be followed:

# Shaming of sexual acts, kinks, promiscuous behavior and attitudes is not allowed even with consent of targeted characters. This has a chilling effect on other players who witness it.
# The types of characters that are played are restricted as follows:
#* Characters which are representations of major figures of currently widely-practiced religions are not allowed. Depictions of beings from other mythology are allowed.
#* Characters that depict politically or socially controversial figures or transparent representations thereof may not be played.
#* Characters must -- even in cases where they are drawn from Mythology -- be in some way be uniquely your own.
#* Characters that are the intellectual property of another can only be played with the explicit permission of the property owner.
#* You may not represent yourself OOC or IC as an official of or otherwise representing any Wizard-operated entity such as Layleaux or Chehon.

Some forms of play and characters are considered too disruptive for Core Building and Public Building. By default these restrictions apply to to those areas, but may be allowed in some zones. Please see rules for those zones. The restrictions are as follows:

# Forms of play:
#* Bloodsports
#* Vorarephilia
#* IC non-consensual play
#* Scat and Watersports
#* Zoophilia -- which for the purposes of Tapestries MUCK refer to sex with non-sapient beings, not to a body form.
#* Age-play -- which for the purposes of Tapestries MUCK involves sexual activities that involve a character that is a minor.
#* Extreme forms of Violence -- which includes anything that does significant or lasting harm to another.
# Characters:
#* Human characters who are prepubescent.
# Other:
#* You should not involve yourself in a scene unless you are invited, IC or OOC. Ask if unsure. Some zones may have rules for implicit consent, please see their rules.

The building policies of the Muck exist to manage system resources and maintain a positive environment for people to interact in.

System Resources
Tapestries has a number of resources that are limited, thus building must be restricted so that they are used wisely. Some of these are technical limitations, some of them are human resource limitations.

* Objects - TinyMUCK uses code writen in the late '80s / early 90's. This code does not scale well, even with modern hardware. Thus the number of objects in a TinyMU*s database directly impacts it's performance and even reliability.
* Staff - Public building (see below) requires a staff to be successful. That staff both needs to encourage the theme of the area, and handle problem users with a level of detail the wizards can not manage to prevent overly stiff cliques and other negative behaviors from ruling an area. There is a limited pool qualified people on the muck for such staff.
* Wizards - The wizards on Tapestries MUCK have limited time to provide guidance to public area owners and staff to help them keep in line with the goals of the Muck.
* Active Player base - There are only so many players at any one time that are interested in being out in the public.

Mission and Environment
Considering the resources that must be managed, we must insure that the building presented to the user supports the system's goals.

* Mission - The world of Tapestries has a specific mission it, building should enhance this.
* Theme - There is a very loose theme to the Tapestries world, which is a backdrop for people's characters to live in. All building should support this theme.
* Topology - Related to the theme is the topology of the Muck. Breaking the suspension of disbelief with entirely unrealistic building hurts people's ability to role play.

MPI Scripting
MPI (My Personal Insanity) is a macro expansion language included in the system. It is poorly implemented and can be CPU abusive on the single-threaded 30 year old server.

* Timer Loops - You may NOT implement {delay} loops. As in a {delay} that calls another {delay} to cause repeated MPI executions.

Core Building
Core building includes infrastructure that other building (primarily public) is linked to. This includes towns, roads, waterways, and various theme support areas that are not really intended as public gathering areas in their own right.

All core building is owned by the Wizards.

Public Building
Public building includes gathering and socialization areas, as well as areas themed for specific tastes (such as specially equipped play areas). Public building should be managed by a staff who actively try and encourage it's use, and appropriate behavior in their areas.

Public building is approved by the wizards. More information on this process can be found in the Public Builder's Guide, which is considered policy for public builders.

Public building is typically managed by Players, though some Wizard owned public building exits. Most notably Fox Plaza.

Private Building
Private building exists for the exclusive use of it's owner as a private retreat from the rest of the muck. Typically this takes the form of some sort of home or private play space.

It is permissible to have a small number of friends use the area as well, or to use it as a small organizational area like a home for a wolf pack. However, this should be carefully restricted not to get out of hand, or it can become classified as unauthorized Public Building, and will be removed.

Private building should not have multiple people linking their rooms together to form larger areas. Again, this will likely classify it as unauthorized Public Building. Small scale exceptions are allowed, such as a friend or two having a private room in your home.

Private building typically takes place in the 'unlinked rooms' area of the muck, though there are a few apartment complexes available.

Building Privlages
There are a number of privlages related to building. Most are reserved for Public and Core building.

Quota
The Muck maintains a quota of objects that a user can own. Every user is given 40 objects which they may use for Private Building and other use.

Extensions to a users quota is only granted for the purpose of Public building.

Public Teleport Patterns
Only Core and Public areas will be given public teleport patterns. This is to maintain as small as possible list of public destinations. Only one per area is allowed.

Listing in LC (Location Count)
Only Core Building and Public Building will be allowed an entry in LC. Core building may have a breakdown depending on how large of an area it is, however, Public building will only be allowed one line for an area. Furthermore the area should be of the sort that is designed to create crowds. For example, public play spaces, bars, etc. Other areas that do not require such advertising will not be granted an LC listing, such as apartment complexes.
#Safeword OOC will always be respected. Safeword IC will be respected unless the area specifically states otherwise. See Policy Safeword or the alt.sex.bondage FAQ if you are unfamiliar with this.
#Some forms of play are considered to be too disruptive for Core and Public ares. These are: bloodsports, non-consensual play, scat, pedophilia, zoophilia, watersports and extreme forms of humiliation and violence.
#*Additionally the following type of characters are too disruptive to be in public areas that do not explicitly allow for it: Underage human characters and representations of holy figures of currently widely-practiced religions.
#*This list may be reduced or altered in some Public Building, please read all such rules. If you are unsure about what is okay, ask the local staff.
#*Defining what qualifies under this clause is the the realm of the Wizards (as is all other policy interpretations.)
#You should not disrupt someone's scene in progress.
#You should not involve yourself in a scene unless you are invited, IC or OOC. Ask if unsure.
#You may not represent yourself OOC or IC as an official of Layleaux or a Wizard.

Out of Character (RL) CONSENT is required for any play, public or private anywhere on Tapestries MUCK. See policy harassment. Not sure? Ask. You are responsible for establishing consent.
