Lairu has spent years making toys for the children of Tamara, and the craftsmanship he learned has gone into what accounts to be his only real possession. This is his 'sword', carved of driftwood pulled from the canals of Sin. Though crude and ineffective, the sword is a childish work of art, the outpouring of great effort and aimless passion that is evident in each and every carved surface. It is surprisingly durable, and has undergone several instance in which angry taskmasters have attempted to break it. In spite of this abuse, the swprd is no worse for wear, and Lairu always seems to get it back, even if it means earning it from the taunting czath in some humiliating way. It took him years to make, and he is quite unwilling to give it up.
Neogem is far more than it seems. Lairu doesn't know that the driftwood he pulled from the slum canal is in fact extraplanar, a piece of some ancient celestial vessel lost during the Twilight War. It is ageless, and nrealy unbreakable, on of the reasons it took him so many years to carve. More significantly, it seems to have absorbed some of the lutrai's own natural energy over the years, and has become charged with quintessance as a result. While this doesn't register in any visible way, it appears to the undead as a monstrous glowing blade, crackling with the raidiance that they most fear. It may have been blessed by Kij herself.
The 'blade' is two and a half feet long, three feet with the handle. It is considerably lighter than a metallic equivalent, and not sharp enough to cut anything. The handle is wrapped in treated canvas to provide a good grip, and the pommel has been set with a round chunk of blue quartz that once hung around his neck. The perforated crosspiece is broad and flat, with a frayed white ribbon tied around one end. This is Lairu's 'favor', an item he believes is required to make him any sort of knight at all. It was given to the young lutrai by one of the other slave girls, and makes Neogem even more difficult to take seriously.
