The East Has the New

From Tapestries MUCK

"The East Has the New" is a protest chant and short cadence.

History

"The East Has the New" was a popular chant in the protests against the terms of the incorporation of Chehon. The first recorded instance of the chant in use was at a worker's demonstration in the Chehon harbor in 38 A.L., and gained popularity in the run-up to the incorporation referendum in 40 A.L. as leaks of the proposed charter showed that the city's borders would exclude the industrial and residential areas south of the Otter River, but would instead include them in the Northern Protectorate. This would have left the people of South Chehon without representation in the city council, severely diluted the representation of the rest of the Protectorate, and make South Chehon subject to the Protectorate Tax, despite the lack of distance-related administration costs which the Tax was originally intended to offset.

After the success of the demonstrations, "The East Has the New" became a recurring chant in popular protests. Derivations have become cadences in the security and personal service industries.

Lyrics

The most popular version of the chant is:

The East has the new
The West has the old
The South's where they use us
to make the North's fucking gold.

Mercenary and monster hunter trainees often replace the second line with "The South's where they train/fuck us" when singing the chant as a cadence.

The Society

Students of The Society's finishing school have their own version of the cadence:

The East's where they work
The South's where we're from
The West's where they train us
to make the North fucking cum.
