The Solid Color Background

This one's the easiest. Simply select the Background layer (Or, if you've deleted that, make a new layer behind everything else), select the color you want, and fill it. If you want a shadow, like the one in the demo to the right, just draw on this background layer with a black airbrush. Since this layer is behind everything else, it won't affect anything but the background.
