Seven hundred years ago, there was the Automatic War. It was fought between the fading rule of the old divinity, the Demigod Amai, and the most powerful of all mortal nations, the Creator State. It was a war to bring about a new age, and the destruction of all magic, which had enslaved the mortal realm since the dawn of time. Unfortunately, it didn’t go very well for anyone, and all of the craters you see on the maps are the result of some pretty catastrophic stupidity on both sides of the conflict.

       Those craters weren’t made by bombs. The Fourth Light burned holes in the fabric of the universe, and what you see is just the way the land collapsed back into the void it left behind. These regions are called Tons, and though most are quiet now, some still flare with the friction between this dimension and others nearby. The damage is that bad, like burrs on a working surface. Sometimes things come through, or are pulled out.

       The lutrai are remnants of the Creator State, once animal soldiers uplifted as advanced familiars and armed to fight against the fantasy of the old world. They were the ‘naval humanoid’, selected from among dozens of experimental aquatic species, and even after seven centuries the survivors of the Automatic War continue to populate the southern archipelago of Cekus.
