Intent
The building policies are designed to meet three goals:
- Database Size - This is very important as Muck databases fail to scale well. As of the time of this writing our database is half the size of other mucks our size, and it shows in the performance.
- Mission and Theme - The world of Tapestries has a specific mission and theme to it. We try, especially in Core Building to maintain this theme. See policy mission and policy theme.
- Topology - We believe that it is important to maintain a believable topology to the Muck. While the world does support magic and the like, having miles of forest nestled between two buildings on the same block of a street hurts the suspension of disbelief.
Several terms must first be understood, see Core Building, Public Building, Private Building and Unauthorized Building.
Approval
To build anything that will be classified as Core Building or Public Building, the project must be pre-approved by a building wizard, including scope, what type of building is expected to be attached to it, any special policies that the area will request, and the like. For Core areas one must agree that the area will be @chowned by a wizard and that the wiz core will maintain rights to keep and modify the area as they see fit. Further Core Building requires approval from the head wizard.
For Private Building, you need the approval of the maintainer of the Public Building that you are attaching your area to. Further, it is the responsibility of the Public Builders to insure there are no glaring topological violations attached to their area.
Unauthorized building requires no approval process, however it should be limited to one's home, and should not be linked to other areas. Unauthorized areas that the wizards feel exceed this may be removed with out notice.
Applications for building and more details on the approval process can be found in the Public Builder's Guide.
Quota
Quota extensions will be provided only for Core and Public building. To maintain a reasonable sized database we can not give extra room in it to unless the area is for public use. Mucks do not scale well because of how the memory model is designed, so we have to keep things tight.
Using multiple characters, or grouping together with others to create large areas of Unauthorized Building can lead to anything from a loss of building privileges to the total removal of the characters involved.
Public Teleport Patterns
Only Core and Public areas will be given public teleport patterns. This is to maintain as small as possible list of public destinations. Only one per area is allowed.
Listing in LC (Location Count)
Again, only Core Building and Public Building will be allowed an entry in LC. Core building may have a breakdown depending on how large of an area it is, however, Public building will only be allowed one line for a facility. Furthermore the area should be of the sort that is designed to create crowds. For example, public play spaces, bars, etc. Other areas that do not require such advertising will not be granted an LC listing, such as apartment complexes.
