Lloyd FJ40.05
The Austro-Hungarian Bunnies figured it out first. If you can fire forward you win. The problem was that their answer is to have the pilot climb out of the cockpit to man the gun. There was no co-pilot. Not many of the Does were willing to try it! Click here for larger image

Morane-Saulnier
The French Foxes hit back HARD with the Morane- Saulnier. The Vixens figured that by adding a steel plate to the prop, any bullets that hit it wouldn't damage the propeller. Unfortunately about 1 in 5 bullets came back at the pilot. NOT a great answer! Click here for larger image

Eindecker
The German Bunnies came up with the only practical answer. The Interrupter gear! This allowed the guns to be fired forward without hitting the prop. Joined with the deadly Eindecker, the foxes lost control of the air for months! Click here for larger image

Airco DH2
The Foxes answer was to remove the prop from the front of the plane. By moving the propeller from the equation it cleared the guns forward. Unfortunately the DH2 was not a very good fighter plane. It was fairly fragile and tended to break-up on landing. Click here for larger image

Albatross D.V
The Hun-Bunnies upped the ante with the introduction of the D.V Albatross. Faster and more maneuverable, it all but blew the Foxes out of the sky! Click here for larger image

SPAD XIII
As with the Ground war numbers made all the difference. When the Americans arrived they were given the SPAD XIII. In every way the equal of the best the Bunnies had to offer, the Yanks were pivotal in wrestling back control of the sky and winning the war! Click here for larger image
